Health & Fitness Friday (2)

February 5, 2016

Time for another installment of health and fitness Friday! This will not be a weekly post but I at least want to make it a monthly post. Health and fitness is a passion of mine. I really believe it’s a lifestyle. Like I’ve said before we only have one life and one body so we must take care of it.

I have been on track and feeling great. I am now down 8 lbs and couldn’t be more excited. I feel great and am very motivated to keep plugging along. The secret is clean eating and exercise. There are no short cuts when it comes to your health. And it’s not just about the weight loss for me. I want to feel better.

I’ve been doing lots of cardio. I need to up my weight training game. I went back to my FIGHT class yesterday and it felt great. I am nice and sore today and I love it. Being sore lets me know that I am putting in the work and I am getting stronger. I want to try a couple other classes at my gym. I’d like to get on a set weekly schedule.

Here’s what FIGHT looks like:

I have pretty much cut out my snacking problem. If you know anything about me I was a big snacker. I would have rather snacked than ate a full meal. I have cut it out and if I do snack then I find something healthy. I am doing my best at eating 3 well rounded meals. It’s going pretty well and I am not feeling as hungry as I used to.

How are you doing in the health and fitness category? Did you make any goals this year?

Snacking smarter in the New Year

January 19, 2016

With the new year comes resolutions. Did you make any? A common theme for many is to get in shape. The beginning of the year is the perfect time to establish new routines and habits. I am working on my health and fitness as I mentioned last week. I am cleaning up my eating and getting back to a fitness schedule. I always feel so much better when I’m back to my healthy routines.

One of my problems is over snacking. I have been working on finding better for you snacks. I am trying to be consistent with my eating every day. I eat three meals and three snacks a day. This is what works for me. I recently found goodnessknows® snack squares. It comes in three different flavor varieties: goodnessknows® Cranberry, Almond, Dark Chocolate, goodnessknows® Apple, Almond & Peanut, Dark Chocolate, and goodnessknows® Peach & Cherry, Almond, Dark Chocolate. I found them at Walmart up by the registers.

I put together a quick HIIT (high intensity interval training) workout. It’s only 10 minutes and everyone, including beginners, can do this workout. HIIT workouts are all the rage right now. They allow you to burn lots of calories in a short period of time. HIIT workouts are essentially alternating between intense activity and rest periods. The key is really push hard and give it your all during the active periods.

Start with an easy 2 minute warm up like walking in place. Then you are going to alternate four different exercises (jumping jacks, squats, sit ups, side lunges) for 20 seconds each with 10 seconds of rest in between. You will repeat this cycle three times. This will be your 10 minute HIIT (and 2 minute warm up). To burn even more calories you can do this a couple times throughout the day. Let me break it down for you:

2 minute warm up – Walk in place

Do jumping jacks for 20 seconds. Then rest for 10 seconds.
jumping jack
Do squats for 20 seconds, yes even if it’s burning keep going. Then rest for 10 seconds.
squat
Do sit ups for 20 seconds. Then rest for 10 seconds.
sit up
Last do alternating side lunges for 20 seconds. Rest for 10 seconds and go back to the beginning. Repeat these steps two more times for a total of three times.
side lunge
This is a great HIIT to start out with if you are just beginning your fitness journey or if you have never done high intensity training before. I like to follow up my workout with a snack if it’s not close to a meal time. Like I mentioned above goodnessknows® is my go to snack. They remind us that doing a little good for yourself can go a long way. Goodness to greatness! It just takes a little work.

Health & Fitness Friday (1)

January 15, 2016

If you’ve been around this blog any amount of time you know I have a love hate relationship with health and fitness. I have blogged about it off and on for several years now. I’m currently back on and hoping to stay there. It’s not easy but it’s necessary. Unfortunately picking up the pounds is much easier to do these days. I need to focus on staying consistent. I want to not only look good in my clothes, I want to feel good all the way around.

I have been slowly easing myself back in my healthy habits the past two weeks. I did not want to dive in head first and set myself up for failure. It’s working pretty well. I have really cleaned up my eating. I exercised a couple times this week. All in all I am feeling really good about the work I’m putting in.

I have not set any fitness goals yet. To be honest I haven’t had the time to sit down and think about them. That’s on my agenda this coming week. I want to get some goals on paper and have tangible things to work towards. I do run a Facebook group focused on health and fitness. I am always asking them their goals because I think it’s important to keep the big picture in mind.

Is there anything specific you’d like to see on this blog when it comes to health and fitness? Let me know in the comments.

June 20×30

June 1, 2015

Welcome to a new month! How in the heck is it June already? Logan’s last day of preschool is today. Nathan is down to his two last weeks. Summer is here! I’ve been slacking in the health and fitness department lately. Last month was all about the wedding. This month it’s back to business!

Remember last year when I did the May 20×30 fitness challenge? Well I’m bringing it back. It was so much fun and really  helped keep in accountable. I’m hoping this year will be just as successful. And I’m inviting you to join along! Use the hashtag #june20x30 on social media so we can all see you getting in your 20 minutes of fitness every day in June.

junefit

I’m really trying hard to get back on track. I have a few mini vacations planned this summer and I want to feel my best. I’ve dusted off my fitbit and started tracking my food on My Fitness Pal again. I know I can do this! And I want to do it with me!

Let me know if you are in! I also started a Facebook accountability group. If you are interested let me know and I can add you to our group. Let’s rock June!!
