Do you suffer? I feel like this time of the year the winter always gets the best of me. I get into my own head and it’s just a downward spiral from there. It’s a combination of many things. During the holidays I’m on such a high and then it’s all over as quick as it started. January is just a dreary cold month. And don’t get me started on February.
It’s easy to get down and want to stay there. But there are things you can do to help beat the winter blues. I will share three tips that help me this time of year. Full disclosure I am not a health professional. If your winter blues become more than you can handle you need to seek professional help.
- Get moving – exercise immediately boosts my mood. It’s scientific. When you are exercising your body releases endorphins. Endorphins react with the receptors in your brain and trigger a positive feeling in your body. Plus you cannot deny the health benefits of exercise. It really is a natural drug.
- Go outside – yes even when it’s cold. All you need is a little bit of sunshine to do wonders. Sunshine works very similar to endorphins. Plus vitamin D does a body good. It’s a double win.
- Start a new project – it will help you focus your energy. This is the perfect chance to start something new. The new year always brings resolutions and new beginnings. Focusing on something new and exciting can give you the boost you really need.
There are many other ways that can help you beat the winter blues. These are just a few that have personally helped me. And don’t forget to talk about it. You might be surprised to find out someone else close to you is struggling a bit too. Talking it out can do wonders. Just put it out there instead of keeping it bottled up.
