Did you play team sports growing up? Do you play team sports now? My husband is very passionate about the wilds playing sports. We have had them both in soccer since they were 3 years old. John started sports at a very young age as well. I never did. I tried softball once and completely hated it. Now I’m thinking did I miss out? Would I be a different person today if I had played team sports?
I completely agree with John that our boys need team sports. I never really thought about the importance until I had kids of my own. The wilds are learning how to work with others. They are learning that you win some and lose some. They are learning that everyone has to do their part to get the job done. Team sports teach very valuable lessons.
I am not competitive at all. This probably goes back to me never playing sports. I am not a leader. Again, points back to never playing sports. Kids learn about healthy competition when playing on a team. Competitiveness is good. They learn how to be leaders on the field. I wish I was more of a leader. Although I can’t change that I never played sports, I can make sure my kids do.
I also read that team sports help to build confidence. I can totally see this in my boys. When they have a great game it shows. They hold their heads a little higher. They feel great about themselves. They also enjoy the praise that comes from John and I. We really enjoy giving the praise. There is nothing better than being a proud parent. I definitely could have used some of that confidence as a youngster.
We will continue to keep the boys in team sports as long as they are enjoying it. I will never force them to do something. I may strongly suggest that they at least try it. We started Tae Kwon Do last month. They were not thrilled at the idea. I told them both they had to at least try it. They tried it and love it. It is very important to John and I to keep the boys active.
Are your children in team sports? What are your thought on this subject?
