Yesterday morning John and I were planning on doing a training course for an upcoming mud run. We thought it would be good practice for the race he has at the end of the month. Florida got hit with a cold front. It was in the low 40s. I refused to go. He somehow talked me into it anyway. We bundled up and off we went.
The place was only 15 minutes from our house. We pulled in and it wasn’t what we expected. The cold had scared everyone off. I was expecting the course to be set up or at least partically. It was just obstacles set up right next to each other. Definitely not what we were looking to do. We decided to go for a trail run instead.
I did some quick googling and found a trail just a few minutes from our house. After checking the area we decided to give it a go. Unfortanately we could not find a trail map so we went in blind. We figured we couldn’t get too lost. What I found online said it was a 4 mile loop. However, as we were running it was not just a loop. There were several trails shooting off in different directions.
After running for almost two miles we decided we should probably figure out where we were. This is where dual survival comes in. John would be the military man and I’m Cody. I’m definitely more like the barefooted hippy out of the two of us. We pulled out John’s phone to look at GPS. He’s looking for the sun to see what direction we are pointed. After figuring out where we needed to go we took off again. After a few minutes we stopped to check GPS again. Wrong way…we turned around.
I got a little freaked out when I heard rustling in the bushes. I kept thinking of wild boars for some reason (the last episode of DS I saw had wild boars). I took my headband off and put it in on my wrist. If wild boars were coming to get us my Momma Bear insticts would kick in. I was going to hog tie that sucker. I would protect my mate at all costs. Now if a wild boar really came out I would probably pass out right there. But my plans sounded very courageous in my mind at the time.
We ended up finding our way back to the car easier than we expected. As we were leaving we found another entrance that had a map. Great reference for next time. We will definitely be back.
